About Kuno-Palpur Wildlife Sanctuary :

  • Kuno Palpur NP is located in the Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh.
  • It is spread over an area of 750 sq km.
  • It received the status of national park in 2018.
  • It currently has leopards, jackals, spotted deer, sambhar, neelgai, chinkara, wild boar and the four-horned antelope, a prey base ideal for felids.
  • KP WLS was also chosen for the lion reintroduction project in 2013.
  • Kuno Palpur is now its way to become the only wildlife protected area in the world to host all four major cat species—lion, tiger, cheetah and leopard.
Plan of the Government :
  • The cheetahs will come from Namibia in Africa.
  • On their arrival, the animals will be kept at the enclosure in Mukundara Reserve in Rajasthan, before being shifted to individual reserves.
  • The animals will be maintained in 3-4 metapopulations with Kuno-Palpur getting 6-8 cheetahs.
  • The males will be released first while the females will remain in the enclosure.
  • This is to prevent the males from wandering away.
  • The females will be released only after the males have settled down.
  • Soft release enclosures 1 sq. km in area and 2.5 metres in height will be created.
